Using the free game scorer
The free game is the scorer to reach for when whatever you are playing is not in the list. It knows no rules at all: it keeps totals, a hand-by-hand history and the standings, and leaves every decision about what earns a point to you. It suits board games, house variants, impromptu tournaments and anything else normally counted with a pen on the back of an envelope.
The two settings worth thinking about
The first is the target. You can name the score that ends the game or leave it blank: with a target set, each player shows how far they still have to go; without one, you simply get totals. Leave it blank for games with a fixed number of rounds, where the ending is not a score at all.
The second, and the more important, is the direction. Highest score wins is the usual choice, but a good number of games work the other way and reward whoever collects the least: golf, several rummy variants, penalty games generally. Getting it wrong does not change any of the numbers, but it turns the standings upside down, and anyone reading the screen will be convinced they are winning when they are losing.
Give it a name you will recognise
You can name the game, and it helps more than it sounds like it will: the history stays on your device, so a month later that name is the only thing separating Sunday's burraco tournament from the Yahtzee game the week before. The settings are saved on this device, so the next game starts already configured the way you want it.

- Do I have to set a target?
- No. Leave it blank if your game ends after a fixed number of rounds rather than at a score. The standings still work, they simply do not show how far there is to go.
- What if the lowest score wins our game?
- Set the direction to lowest score wins. The numbers stay exactly the same, but the standings sort the other way round so first place really is the player who is ahead.
- Are the settings remembered?
