Keeping score at UNO
A hand ends the moment one player runs out of cards. Then you count, and the rule surprises anyone used to playing one-off hands: the player who went out does not record their own cards, they collect the total of everybody else's. The opponents record zero. Only one person's total grows per hand, and the first to five hundred points wins the game.
There are only three values to remember. Numbered cards are worth their number, zero through nine. Action cards — Draw Two, Reverse and Skip — are worth twenty each. Wilds, meaning Wild and Wild Draw Four, are worth fifty. That is why being caught with two wilds costs far more than being caught with five low numbered cards.
The other method
Plenty of tables use the reverse count: instead of awarding points to the player who went out, everyone records the cards left in their own hand, and the game ends when someone passes five hundred — with the lowest total winning. The two methods cannot be mixed mid-game, because they order the standings in opposite directions. This scorer is set up for the classic method, where the highest score wins.
Using the scorer
The target is five hundred points, as in the published rules. At the end of a hand, tap the name of whoever went out and enter the sum of the opponents' cards, leaving everybody else on zero. The ten, twenty and fifty quick buttons match a mid-range numbered card, an action card and a wild, so most totals come together in a few taps.
Frequently asked questions
- Who takes the points at the end of a hand?
- In the classic method, only the player who went out, and they take the total of the cards left in everyone else's hands. The opponents record zero for that hand.
- What are action cards and wilds worth?
- Draw Two, Reverse and Skip are twenty points each. Wild and Wild Draw Four are fifty. Numbered cards are worth their face number.
- We only play a single hand, with no running total.
- That works too: enter the hand's score and the game is settled there. The five-hundred target is a reference point, not a requirement.
- Can we record cards left in hand instead?
- Yes, but you have to read the standings backwards, since this scorer ranks the highest total first. Pick one method before you start and stay with it.
